Types of IP Protection We Handle

Utility Patents
Protection for new inventions, processes, machines, and compositions of matter under the Patents Act 1983. A granted patent in Malaysia is valid for 20 years from the filing date.

Utility Innovations
A simplified form of patent protection for minor improvements and innovations, with a shorter term of protection. Suitable for inventions that may not meet the full inventive step threshold for a patent.

Industrial Designs
Registration under the Industrial Designs Act 1996 for the ornamental and aesthetic aspects of an article — its shape, configuration, pattern, or ornamentation. An industrial design registration is initially valid for 5 years and renewable for up to 25 years.

International Patent Protection

Paris Convention — Filing in individual countries within 12 months of the Malaysian priority date.
Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) — A single international application via WIPO covering over 150 member countries, allowing clients to defer national phase filings while assessing commercial potential.
